Senator Kamala Harris has announced she is running for president in 2020. Born in California on October 20, 1964, she is the daughter of Jamaican-born economics professor Donald Harris and Shyamala Gopalan, who is of Indian descent. She is the first Jamaican-American to run for president. In 2010, she made history as the first female and first African-American to serve as California’s attorney general. She ran again in 2014 and was re-elected. From 2004 to 2011, she was the 27th district attorney of San Francisco. Senator Harris graduated from Howard University and received her law degree from the University of California, Hastings. She is married to Doug Emhoff.
