Jamaican-born Noel C. Spencer has picked up a key endorsement ahead of the November 8 general elections in New York State and elsewhere across the United States. Mr. Spencer, a Democratic candidate for a seat in the Orange County Legislature in Upstate New York, has received the endorsement from Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in New York. The nod from Senator Clinton comes three weeks after important endorsements from the Hudson Valley Area Labour Federation of the powerful AFL-CIO union, and the Latino Democrats of Orange County. Mr. Spencer said that if elected, he would move against property tax increases, end government waste, stop uncontrolled development and work to improve the local economy through job creation. Tim Riley, President of the Hudson Valley Area Union said that his unit was backing Spencer’s candidacy after carefully considering his stance on a number of key labour issues that affected the working people in the district. “We look forward to working with a responsive local government representative who is aware, concerned and constantly striving to improve the conditions for all workers in Orange County,” Mr. Riley said. In 1998, Mr. Spencer became the only candidate of the Orange County Democratic Party to win an elected seat in Orange and Ulster Counties. He is also the first Caribbean or African-American to be elected to the Town Council of Chester. He earned his MBA in International Finance from St. John’s University in New York and later founded Spencer’s Financial Services, Inc., a diversified financial services firm located in Newburgh, New York. Mr. Spencer has served on the Board of Kingston College Old Boys’ Association (USA) and was President from 1995 to 1996. He is married to Dr. Patricia Miller and they have two children. Source: JIS
