Jamaican Americans Elected in 2020 Primary and General Elections

In 2020, more than  40 candidates of Jamaican heritage  ran for offices across the U.S. in both the primary and general elections.  Most remarkable, was the election of Senator Kamala Harris, daughter of a Jamaican father and Indian mother, who made history as the nation's first female Vice President-elect to the highest office.  Here is the breakdown of the winners:

FLORIDA
  • Attorney Joan Anthony was elected as Circuit Court Judge in Broward County, 7th Judicial Circuit.
  • Dale Holness was re-elected as Broward County Mayor.
  • Hazelle Rogers was re-elected as Lauderdale Lakes Mayor.
  • Anika Omphroy was re-elected to the Florida House of Representatives, District 95.
  • Marlon Bolton was re-elected to City of Tamarac Commission.
  • Mark Douglas was re-elected to City of Sunrise Commission.
  • Jennifer Andreu won the seat for City of Plantation Council, Group 3.
  • ​Melissa Dunn was elected to City of Lauderhill Commission, Seat 2.
  • Karlene Maxwell-Williams was elected to City of Lauderdale Lakes Commission, Seat 4.
  • Joy B. Smith won the seat for City of West Park Commissioner, Seat 3.
  • Ann Marie Sorrell won the seat for Palm Beach County’s Soil and Water Conservation Board, Group 2.
  • Dr. Norman Whyte won the seat on the Miami-Dade County Democratic Executive Committee, District 15.


GEORGIA 
  • Attorney Jewel Scott won the seat for Superior Court Judge in Clayton County.
  • Donna McLeod was re-elected to the Georgia House of Representatives, District 105.

MARYLAND 
  • Anthony Brown was re-elected to Maryland's Fourth Congressional District. 
  • Elizabeth Morris was re-elected as Circuit Court Judge, 5th Judicial District.
  • Phelecia Nembhard was elected as City of New Carrollton Mayor.

​NEW YORK 
  • Yvette Clarke was re-elected to New York's 9th Congressional District. 
  • Sam Walker was re-elected as New York State Supreme Court Judge, 9th Judicial District.
  • Carol Sharpe was re-elected as New York State Supreme Court Judge, 1st Judicial District.

RHODE ISLAND
  • Marcia Ranglin-Vassell was re-elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives, 5th District.
