Jamaican-born Dr. E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD, has been appointed as the new Chair and Department Executive Officer of the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine Department of Internal Medicine, effective January 1, 2016.

During his tenure as chair, Dr. Abel will hold the Francois M. Abboud Chair in Internal Medicine and the John B. Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research. He will retain his leadership role as Director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center. He holds a joint appointment in the UI Carver College of Medicine as a professor of internal medicine and of biochemistry.
Dr. Abel is internationally recognized for his research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for cardiac dysfunction in obesity, type 2 diabetes, and type 1 diabetes, and for studies of the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of insulin resistance, obesity, and its complications. He received a medical degree from the University of West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. He was a Rhodes Scholar and Clinical Research Fellow with Professor John G. Ledingham at the University of Oxford, England, where he also earned a DPhil (PhD) in physiology. He completed an internship and residency in medicine at McGraw Medical Center, Northwestern University Medical School, where he served as chief resident of Internal Medicine at the VA Lakeside Medical Center. He was a clinical and research fellow and instructor at Harvard Medical School before joining the faculty at University of Utah in 2000.

In the course of his career, Dr. Abel has received numerous national honors and awards, and has been a lecturer and visiting professor in the United States and internationally. He is primary or coauthor or editor on more than 170 scientific publications. Dr. Abel, a member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians, was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in October 2015.

The department extends sincere gratitude to Gary Rosenthal, MD, whose outstanding 18-month tenure as interim Chair and DEO of Internal Medicine was critical to the continued success of the department during this time. Truly, he has worked tirelessly not only to maintain the department’s stature but also to advance the departmental missions of education, research, and clinical care during his tenure as interim chair.

Under Dr. Abel's leadership, the Department of Internal Medicine will continue to grow as a world-class department with clinical, scientific, and academic distinction.
