Jamaican-American Ashleigh Johnson is the best female water polo player in the world for the fourth time in ten years (2014, 2015, 2016, and 2019) by Swimming World Magazine. Born in Miami, Florida on September 12, 1994 to Jamaican parents Donna and Winston Johnson, the 2016 Olympic gold medalist created history as the first black woman to play on the U.S. Olympic water polo team. She is a graduate of Ransom Everglades High School and Princeton University where she studied psychology. She led her high school to three straight Florida state championships. As one of the greatest athletes in Princeton history, she currently holds the Princeton record for being the only player in the school’s history with 1,362 saves. Johnson has been the winner of many awards in her short career including: a 19-time Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Defensive Player of the Week award winner, a four-time first-team all-conference player, CWPA Player of the Year in 2015, First place in the Pan-Am Games in 2015, First place in the World League championships in 2015 and 2016, First place at the women’s World Cup in 2014, and the world championships in 2015.
